What actually makes nursery wallpaper safe, which palettes help a baby settle, gender-neutral themes and made-to-measure murals sized to the cot wall.

For a nursery, choose a non-woven or textile wallpaper printed with water-based, low-VOC inks, and keep the palette calm and low-contrast on the wall the cot faces. That single sentence covers the three things that matter: what is in the air your baby breathes, how the wall handles cleaning, and what the room does to a tired child at 7 p.m.
No wallpaper is “100% safe”, and a seller claiming that is overreaching. What you can actually check is the ink system and the base material. We print with HP Latex inks — water-based and low-VOC, no solvent smell during or after hanging. The bases we recommend for nurseries are non-woven and textile: both are breathable, so moisture does not sit trapped between paper and plaster.
Two honest caveats. First, air the room for a day or two after hanging, whichever brand you buy — fresh adhesive needs to dry out before the cot goes back against that wall. Second, our self-adhesive foil is practical and scrubbable, but its surface breathes less than non-woven, so we point it at toddler and play zones rather than a newborn's cot wall. The base-material question is covered in depth in our non-woven wallpaper guide.
Both have a place — in different spots. Parents often ask us for bold black-and-white prints because young babies visibly lock onto strong contrast. That belongs on the wall the changing table faces, or in the play corner, where you want the baby engaged. The sleep wall is a different job: low saturation, low contrast, large soft shapes. Sage, sand, dusty blue, clay, warm grey.
A practical split for one room: a calm mural on the cot wall, one or two high-contrast prints in frames on the opposite side. Frames move as the child grows. Wallpaper is the slow layer of the room; posters and textiles are the fast layer.
A gender-neutral nursery outlasts a themed one: no repaint when a sibling arrives, and the room converts to a guest room with nothing more than new bedding. These five directions hold up:
All of these exist in our catalogue in several colourways, and because we print to order, a design can be recoloured to match the palette you already picked for cot linen and curtains.
Made to measure means the mural is printed for your wall's exact width and height. A 3.2 m × 2.6 m nursery wall is 8.32 m², and that is the area you pay for. At 750–950 TL/m² (roughly $17–21 / €15–18), a typical nursery feature wall lands between 6,200 and 7,900 TL (roughly $140–175 / €125–150) in materials.
A mistake we see often in nursery orders at our workshop is a mural centred on the wall's midpoint when the cot stands against that same wall. The hero of the artwork — the moon, the balloon, the fox — disappears behind the cot and its bumper. Tell us where the cot will stand and we shift the composition up or sideways before printing. It takes minutes on our side and saves the whole design.
Measuring is two numbers, width and height. Our measuring guide shows how to handle sloped ceilings and skirting if the nursery sits under the roof.
Somewhere around 18 months, the wall becomes a canvas. Plan for that day now:
Skip abrasive sponges on all three. They polish a shiny patch into the print, and you will see it every evening under the reading lamp.
| Age | Theme direction | Material advice |
|---|---|---|
| 0–1 | Calm and low-contrast: clouds, soft botanicals, tonal skies | Non-woven or textile on the cot wall — breathable base, low-VOC printing |
| 1–3 | Recognition: animals, simple shapes, muted rainbows | Textile still leads; self-adhesive foil earns its keep at hand height in play zones |
| 3+ | Story worlds: maps, space, dinosaurs, forests | Self-adhesive foil for scrubbability, or a fresh made-to-measure mural for the big-kid room |
When the nursery grows into a proper kids' room, our kids' room wallpaper guide picks up where this one ends.
Choose water-based, low-VOC printing on a breathable base such as non-woven or textile, hang it, then air the room for a day or two. That is what we print and what we would hang in our own children's rooms. Treat any “zero emissions” or “100% safe” claim, from any seller, with suspicion — honest manufacturers name their ink system instead.
It works, with one nuance: the surface breathes less than non-woven, so we suggest it for toddler and play areas more than for a newborn's cot wall. It is also the easiest to remove, which makes it the rental pick. Our peel and stick guide weighs both sides.
Low-saturation, low-contrast palettes: sage, sand, dusty blue, warm grey. Keep bold contrast for the play corner, not the wall the cot faces. No colour is magic — darkness and routine do the real work; the wall just should not fight them.
The print is composed for one wall and does not move with you. What grows is the theme: choose clouds, botanicals or mountains over licensed baby characters and the same wall still looks right at six. When taste changes anyway, you rewallpaper one wall, not the whole room.
