What “Safe” Means for Nursery Wallpaper

No wallpaper is “100% safe”, and a seller claiming that is overreaching. What you can actually check is the ink system and the base material. We print with HP Latex inks — water-based and low-VOC, no solvent smell during or after hanging. The bases we recommend for nurseries are non-woven and textile: both are breathable, so moisture does not sit trapped between paper and plaster.

Two honest caveats. First, air the room for a day or two after hanging, whichever brand you buy — fresh adhesive needs to dry out before the cot goes back against that wall. Second, our self-adhesive foil is practical and scrubbable, but its surface breathes less than non-woven, so we point it at toddler and play zones rather than a newborn's cot wall. Calm Palettes vs Stimulation

Both have a place — in different spots. Parents often ask us for bold black-and-white prints because young babies visibly lock onto strong contrast. That belongs on the wall the changing table faces, or in the play corner, where you want the baby engaged. The sleep wall is a different job: low saturation, low contrast, large soft shapes. Sage, sand, dusty blue, clay, warm grey.

A practical split for one room: a calm mural on the cot wall, one or two high-contrast prints in frames on the opposite side. Frames move as the child grows. Wallpaper is the slow layer of the room; posters and textiles are the fast layer.

A mistake we see often in nursery orders at our workshop is a mural centred on the wall's midpoint when the cot stands against that same wall. The Cleaning Reality with a Toddler

Somewhere around 18 months, the wall becomes a canvas. Plan for that day now:

• Textile surface: wipes clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. Fingerprints and food splashes come off; wax crayon does not, so keep crayons away from this wall.
• Non-woven: the same light-wipe care, and the breathable base keeps it the first choice for the cot wall.
• Self-adhesive foil: the scrubbable one. Marker, yoghurt, sticker residue — this surface takes a proper wipe-down without marking. A sensible switch once the child moves to a toddler bed.

Skip abrasive sponges on all three. They polish a shiny patch into the print, and you will see it every evening under the reading lamp.
